Sew Together

In the Sew Together program you can design your own class and invite whomever you wish. Gather a group of friends, family or coworkers then choose a class topic. We’ve provided a list but if you’d like to create your own, just ask! Then contact us at the store and we’ll work with you to find a date and time that work for everyone. Our wonderful classroom machines will be at the ready and one of our quality instructors will be on hand to teach your class. Fees vary.

Hanstudio

Treat yourself to uninterrupted sewing time on one of Hans’ fabulous classroom machines. For a nominal fee you can relax while sewing on a Bernina 440. Use our work and cutting space, and even pick our brains. Just give us a call to schedule your time. Hanstudio fee: $8/hour.

 

 

EARLY 2008 CLASSES

 

Kids’ Sewing Workshop: Mondays, January 21st, February 11th, March 10th, April 7th, and May 12th, 1:30-4:00 p.m. with Katie Stout. 5 sessions (can attend any or all classes). This workshop is designed for 8-14 year olds. New activities will be presented each time or a student may choose an ongoing project to work on. Projects will include simple toys, pillows or simple garments. All sewing will be done on Hans’ Classroom sewing machines generously provided by the store. Skills learned will include basic sewing –including beginners- and more advanced projects based on the skills of participants. Fabrics will be provided or participants may bring their own. Students can arrive anytime after 1:30 and will be included in activities as they arrive. Cost: $15 per session.

Bernina Software Sampler 2008- Virtual Training: Saturdays, January 26th, February 23rd, March 15th, April 26th, May 17th, June 28th, August 16th, September 20th, October 18th, and November 22nd, 10:00 a.m-12:00 p.m. with Eileen Ostrowsky and Kim Gust. 10 sessions (can attend series or single sessions). Already own Bernina embroidery software V4 or V5? Do you want to learn more about how to use it to its great potential? Join us with your laptop, for a live virtual training session from Bernina USA. CD with lesson material is provided, and you just follow along. Or you can choose to take the CD home and take the training at your leisure. Bring in your completed project from the previous month, and get a $5 Hans’ gift certificate. Cost: $7 per session, or $50 for all 10 sessions.

Intimate Valentine Lingerie: Mondays, January 28th, February 4th, and 11th, 5:30-8:00 p.m. with Rebecca Sites. 3 class series . With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, there is still time to make that pretty little unmentionable that will inflame the passion of your heart’s desire.  With this simple two-piece lingerie set, camisole and tap pants, learn the basics of lingerie construction: spaghetti straps, application of elastic, and insetting flat lace trim. Learn how the right feet can speed up and simplify sewing with those sometimes tricky, slippery fabrics. And discover how easy it is to construct a flattering bias garment. Cost: $60.

 

Fabric Wrapped Coiled Bowl: Tuesday, January 29th 1:30-4:30 p.m. with Katie Stout. 1 class session. Have you seen them? If not check them out at Hans’!  They look more complicated than they really are to make.  With your basic sewing machine skills you can complete a small bowl during this three hour class.  With the skills that you learn you will be able to make coasters, baskets of various sizes and shapes, and even purses or totes! Cost: $25.

Simply Stippling: Thursday, February 7th, 5:30-8:00 p.m. with Joanie Zeier Poole. 1 class session. Discover the fun of filling your quilts with free-motion squiggles! Learn how a beautifully stippled background can enhance your machine-quilted designs. This hands-on class includes information on supplies, machine set-up, and techniques needed to make your work a success. Cost: $25.

Hand Sewing for Kids and Adult Beginners: Wednesdays, February 13th, 20th, and 27th, 4:00-5:30 p.m. with Katie Stout and Rebecca Sites. 3 sessions (can attend any or all three). This course offers hand sewing survivor skill development. If you’ve always wanted to be able to sew on buttons, do hemming and basic hand sewing stitches, this is your opportunity. You can take one, two or all three of the sessions. Session 3 will include a simple project. February 13th - Sewing Buttons; February 20th - Hemming; February 27th - Hand Sewn Pincushion. Cost: $15 per session.

Victorian Corset: Wednesdays, February 13th, 20th, 27th, March 5th, 12th, and 19th, 6:00-8:00 p.m. with Rebecca Sites. 6 class series. Whether you are interested in period recreation, costumes, evening wear or making it just for fun, this hands-on class will take you step-by-step through the process of corset construction. Learn how to cut, alter a pattern, select fabric, use boning and attach eyelets for an elegant corset that fits you perfectly. Learn a bit about the history of this fascinating garment too.  Intermediate to advanced  sewing skills are recommended. Pattern and materials purchase are required. Cost: $175.

 

Project Linus: Saturday, February 16th, 9:00-11:30 a.m. or 12:00-2:30 p.m. Come in and donate your time with Madison Chapter Coordinator Christine Popenhagen and Hans' staff to sew and create blankets which are donated to ill children at U.W. Children's Hospital and St. Mary's hospital.

Scrappy Family: Mondays, February 18th, 25th, and March 3rd, 6:00-8:00 p.m. with Rebecca Sites. 3 class series. This fun class explores the creative and colorful art of Victorian crazy patchwork. Students are encouraged to sign up with a family member or friend as we will revisit some nostalgic fabrics from your stash or fond scraps from a childhood wardrobe. The technique is easy and a perfect project for young people. Young students 10-16 should sign up with an adult friend or family member, and are very welcome. We will learn the technique and make a simple project like a pillow or purse. Some materials will be provided. Cost: $60.

Square Dance: Tuesdays, February 19th, and 26th, 5:30-8:00 p.m. with Karen Saunders. 2 class series. Learn to make fancy tessellating designs by simply cutting and sewing squares. You’ll be amazed at the complex designs you can achieve using this fun and easy technique. Cost: $45.

Couture Finishes: Thursday, February 28th, 5:00-8:00 p.m.  with Steffani Lincecum. 1 class session. Join Steffani for an exploration of fine couture details. Bound buttonholes, welt pockets, French seams and much, much more! Cost: $40 plus $15 kit fee.

Pants! Pants! Pants!  Tuesdays, March 4th, 11th, 18th, 25th, April 1st, 8th, 5:30-8:30 p.m. with Denise Sobering. 6 class series. Do you want to make a perfectly fitted pair of pants? How about making three pairs? In this class, you’ll learn how to make a simple pair of pants with an invisible back zipper and no pockets. Then learn the techniques required to fit and make a pair with trouser pockets and a fly front. The final pair will teach you how to make trouser pleats. You’ll leave class with three pair of pants that fit and the skills to make any other pair. Pattern purchase is required. Cost: $90.

Introduction to Needle Felting: Thursdays, March 6th, 20th, 5:30-7:30 p.m. with Joni Stein. 2 class series. Create a free-form animal sculpture that is one-of-a-kind.  Learn hand and machine felting techniques. The two part class is designed to allow you to finish the animal project, and also learn some more advanced techniques to inspire you for your next felted creation. Cost: $50.

Feathered Star Quilt: Mondays, March 10th, 17th, 24th, 31st, and April 14th, 5:30-8:30 p.m. with Denise Sobering. 5 class series. Have you always wanted to make a Feathered Star Quilt, but been afraid of the tiny pieces? Take this class and learn how to handle the small pieces required. Construct  this challenging quilt in five lessons. Learn how to piece the feathers by a strip method, then to assemble the block with partial seam construction. Then we’ll make the medallion into a quilt by adding pieced borders. Intermediate or better sewing skills are required. Accuracy in cutting and piecing is essential for this medallion to be assembled correctly. Book purchase is required. Cost: $75.

Alterations - Creating a Fabulous Fit: Thursdays, March 13th, March 27th, 5:00-8:00 p.m. with Steffani Lincecum. 2 sessions (can attend one or both). With Steffani’s help you can alter your existing clothing to make it fit beautifully. These 3-hour, hands-on workshops are focused on specific garment types and will teach you techniques for mastering excellent fit. March 13th - Pants and Skirts; March 27th - Jackets. Cost: $40 per session.

Sewing 101: Wednesdays, March 26th, and April 2nd, 6:00-8:00 p.m.  with Hans’ staff. 2 class series. This is the perfect class for beginners or for those who have stepped away from sewing and wish to return! We will learn about our sewing machines (what are those buttons and dials, anyway?), share basic sewing tips, learn about fabric choices and create a fun home dec project. Cost: $35.

Prom 911: Saturday, March 29th, 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. with Steffani Lincecum and Rebecca Sites. 1 class session. Be the Belle of the Ball or a Fairy Godmother as you learn how to custom fit your lovely formal gown. Bring in your dress, and the intended wearer (if it isn’t you) and receive the help you need to tackle the intricacies of altering dresses with boning, zippers, neckline and shoulder fitting issues, and hems on delicate fabrics. Join a teaching duo, who are experts at such alterations, and receive the guidance you need to make ready-to-wear look ready-to-wow! Cost: $40.

Kids Sew!  Aprons for Mother’s Day: Mondays, April 7th, 21st, May 5th, 6:00-8:00 p.m. with Jenny Kaltenberg. 3 class series. Hey kids, would you like to make your Mother’s Day present this  year? We are offering a beginning sewing class to make an apron. Anyone 10 and up is welcome to come and sew on our Bernina classroom machines. Create a masterpiece for Mom! Cost: $45.

Beginning Garment Making: Wednesdays, April 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30th, and May 7th 6:00-8:00 p.m. with Rebecca Sites and Deb Doll. 5 class series. Have you always wanted to make garments but need a push to get started? This class offers a relaxed and fun atmosphere for tackling that first project. You’ll learn about pattern and fabric selection, cutting, and basic fitting and sewing techniques. Some sewing experience is helpful. Cost: $75.

 

How to Copy Any Garment Without Taking it Apart: Thursday, April 10th, 5:00-8:00 p.m.  with Steffani Lincecum. 1 class session. Learn how the pros take existing garments and create an exact duplicate without any damage to the original. This fun and informative workshop will show you how you can make multiples of your favorite garments, using commonly available supplies. This easy to understand method has been developed and honed over 20 years of copying designer and vintage garments, during the instructor’s work in the film and television industry, and for her Beverly Hills clients. Cost: $40.

Kid’s Pillowcase Class: Monday, April 28th, 3:00-6:00 p.m. with Katie Stout. 1 class session. Hey kids, aged 8-12, here is your opportunity to make your very own pillowcase. These have been very popular in the past and can be completed in three hours using pre-cut kits-provided as part of your enrollment fee. Sewwww- join your friends and/or make some new ones (boys and girls), and go home with a finished project. We will use machines provided by Hans’ Sewing Center. Prerequisite: some basic sewing machine experience. Cost: $25.

Real Jeanious: Saturday, May 3rd, 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. with Deb Doll. 1 class session. Feeling Blue? Try some jean therapy! Bring some old jeans and make some baggage you actually want.  Make a purse, shoulder bag, or diaper bag, and get carried away with the possibilities! Cost: $35.

Make Your Own Dress Form workshop: Saturday, May 31st, 1:00-4:00 p.m. with Hans’ staff. 1 class session. Join the staff here at Hans’ as we make our very own body doubles. Draping is a patterning technique that allows you to let the fabric express its full potential, but a good dress form is a must. We will be making a dressmaker’s dummy that will allow you to drape and fit a garment that fits perfectly. This is a terrific tool for people who often find it difficult to adjust patterns or find patterns for their unique shape. Cost: $35.

·         Hands-on classes require a sewing machine in good working order. You will be asked when registering whether you’re bringing your own machine or whether you’d like us to provide one for you (at no additional cost). 

·         The supply list for each class you take is found at the end of each class description above. Please insure that you've purchased any necessary items (from the supply list) well in advance of the class date to insure product availability.

·         We reserve the right to cancel classes that don’t meet minimum attendance requirements. When we cancel classes, you will be notified one week before class is scheduled to start and all fees that you’ve paid will be refunded in full.

·         If you decide to cancel class(es) you’ve signed up for, your money will be refunded in full as long as you cancel by the close of business at least 7 days prior to the original class start date. No refunds or credits will be given for any classes cancelled less than 7 calendar days before the class is scheduled to start — sorry, no exceptions.
